Here we are with the second of our series of articles covering some of the
excellent beginner guitar lessons which can be found on YouTube. This beginners guitar lesson, like
the first, is presented by the popular YouTube beginner guitar instruction channel beefcakejcc. So let's start by looking at
the way this video can help people learn guitar in the comfort of their own living room.
This particular lesson aims to help new players learn the correct way that the fingers and
thumb should be placed on the fretboard. The tutor makes a fine job of demonstrating this complex concept, making
it very easy for anyone hoping to learn guitar to follow the lesson, and come away understanding finger and thumb
positions entirely. The lesson is almost six minutes long, and is an excellent example of the high quality beginner
guitar instruction that can be found on YouTube.
The tutor in the video begins by explaining something very fundamental, yet something that
is often not realized by those struggling to learn the basics. Most people new to the guitar believe that when they
are placing a finger from their left hand on to the fret board, that they are attempting to squash the string down
on to the wood. This is in fact not the required result. Instead, left hand fingers simply need to pinch off the
string at the fret above them on the guitar neck. A very sensible thing to begin the lesson with and something all
beginner guitar lessons should emphasize more.
Next, the entire concept of back fretting is introduced. This is something that will often
be overlooked in a beginner guitar lesson; yet again it is something fundamentally important in achieving a clean
playing style. When fingering a fret, it is important to make sure that the pressure is being applied to the string
just slightly behind the fret. Avoid placing the finger to the back of the fret, this leads to increased string
buzz, and will cause the player to expend far more energy pressing the string harder to the fret board. If you are
looking to learn the basics then this is yet another vitally important concept.
Thumb placement is also briefly explained, and the tutor shows us that the thumb should be
placed at the center of the guitar neck on the back of the guitar, do not wrap the thumb around the top of the
fretboard. This is good advice for around 90% of the time, although it should be noted that in some situations the
thumb will take a different. It is also demonstrated that good thumb placement will allow people attempting to
learn guitar to stretch their hand much further.
When it comes to explaining how to hold a pick and strum the guitar this beginner guitar
lesson offers some good advice, although it must be said that many excellent players hold their pick in an entirely
different way than is demonstrated. The tutor does give good advice to somebody who is looking to learn guitar
basics, in the fact that he encourages them to hold their pick between just their thumb and forefinger. There is
nothing wrong with this approach, but it is not the only approach, just a slight criticism here but noting major.
The section which deals with down stroke and up strokes is excellent though, and something that many guitar
teachers miss out, even when producing special beginner guitar
lessons.
All in all this is an excellent example of the high quality beginner guitar lessons which
can be found on YouTube.
